Faye: Hi. I'm Faye Demoyshan with social skills, here to talk with you about whether or not it's okay to send a thank you via email. A really important part of thank you notes is thinking about the
audience, thinking about who you're sending the thank you note to. So, for example, if you're sending in a thank you note to an elderly person who isn't on email that often, or probably might look down on an email thank you note, pick up your pen, write a thank you note and mail it. Good, old fashioned style. If you're sending a thank you note for an occasion and you happen to be invited to that occasion via the internet or via an e-vite, it's absolutely okay to send a thank you note in the same means that you were invited.
If you can send a thank you note, good old fashioned style, handwritten, with a stamp on the front and mailed, I absolutely suggest it. But if you can't, second best is sending it via email.
And it's absolutely okay to send it a thank you note via email. What the worst case scenario would be is, not sending a thank you note at all.
So, first choice is sending a thank you note handwritten via snail mail, and second choice is sending the thank you note via email.
Again, the thing that you really don't want to do is get in the position where you're not sending a thank you note at all.
When you receive a gift, I don't suggest sending a thank you note via text message. It's all right to send quick thanks for small gestures or a time well spent with someone, but for a gift, I wouldn't suggest sending your thanks via text message.
The other great thing about sending an email thank you note is that you can actually include a photograph with the email. So you might have received something beautiful from someone, and you can send them a photo of you using that thing that they gave you, which is a really nice touch to an email thank you. And it also steps it up a little bit and makes it a little bit more enjoyable and a little bit more formal, if you would.
But whatever you do, don't get in the position of not sending an acknowledgement of thanks at all.
