Identify who your favorite professor is. It's not a matter of you throwing out a bunch of adjectives such as saying that you're determined, that you persevere, that you're punctual, that you have good time management skills.
Those are just a bunch of adjectives that you think sound good. But the way to impress an employer is to give an example of one of those.
An example of this is: My favorite professor is Dr. Lawrence and I took a Shakespeare class with her. I really enjoyed her class and I was the only Freshman who took a senior level class with her.
What I think she would say is that I'm persistent. I set a goal for myself of having a senior recital. I put things in place to make that happen. I stayed on campus the summer before my senior year so I could continue my piano studies. I did a lot of things to make sure that I was going to reach that goal during the year.
I had the first piano recital on campus, so I think she would say that I'm pretty persistent because there were a lot of challenges to getting that done.
Think about some of the details that I included in there.
First, I gave some context about how that professor was important to me. I gave some description about how we knew eachother. I didn't spend a lot of time on that, but you want them to understand the relationship between you and the professor. How would that professor be qualified to know you.
Then I picked one attribute I wanted to highlight, and was important for the hiring manager to hear about. Every job, they want someone to be persistent, to set goals and get things done.
I wanted to go through and give one example that involves that professor and illustrated that quality. There may have been a few other details to put in there to lend credibility to the example.
Think about an interaction that you had with them that demonstrates that ability that the employer is going to be able to latch on to, and the employer can latch on to get a picture of who you are as a candidate.
